God’s Design for Sexuality in an Age of Confusion

Corey Widmer is facilitating a 5 week discussion on God’s Design for Sexuality, details below if you are interested.

Real Sex: God’s Design for Sexuality in an Age of Confusion
Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30, Feb 15- March 14 2012
Teacher/Facilitator: Corey Widmer
This five week course will look at how we can live faithful lives when it comes to our sexuality in the confused and over-sexualized society that we live in.  Each class will include some teaching followed by a lengthy time of questions and discussion. The class is appropriate for mature youth and adults. Child care is available.
Some of the topics we will look at include:
-       What is God’s design for human sexuality?
-       How do we deal with the immense sexual pressures all around us?
-       How do you express your sexuality as a single or as a married person?
-       What does the Bible actually say about homosexuality?
-       Is same-sex attraction something to be “changed”?
-       How can we care for our friends who deal with same-sex attraction?

Secret Church 11/4/11

Secret Church on Friday November 4th.  7PM to 1AM

E-mail Robert Cochrane to RSVP at robert.m.cochrane@gmail.com

——————————————-

Secret Church Description

Come join us for Secret Church!  Secret Church is a worship gathering and simulcast led by David Platt, the pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham (he is also the author of the fairly new book and New York Times bestseller, Radical).  The vision of Secret Church is for a group of believers to come together for intense study of God’s Word and to pray.  It comes from the fact that worldwide Christians meet in homes, apartments and other places because they cannot worship freely.  And when they do meet, they want to get the most out of their time together, so they spend many hours in study and in prayer.

How it works:  The teaching and the whole time together will be simulcast.  So it will be broadcast via internet live from Birmingham and shown via TV.

Where:  Robert & Jessica’s House (the Cochranes, not to be confused with the Thompsons).  We hope you can stay the whole time, but if you can only be there for part, we definitely understand.

When:  Friday, November 4

            7 PM - 1 AM  (thats right, 6 hours)

What: The topic of this Secret Church simulcast is … exploring how the Gospel uniquely affects our understanding of family, marriage, sex, and a host of related (and controversial) issues that are ultimately foundational for the display of the glory of God in our lives, in the church, and in the world.  See here for a more in depth description.

Food: If you’re going to be here for 6 hours, you might as well eat.  So … potluck!  We’ll provide the main course and everyone else brings a side/dessert.

Cost: Free

Why: Because we believe that this is a great opportunity to grow in our faith and to know the Gospel more deeply and to grow in our community of believers at Third.

Check out the their website for a lot more (and better) information:  http://www.disciplemakingintl.org/secretchurch/about.html

Email Robert at robert.m.cochrane@gmail.com to RSVP.  So what do you think?  You in?

Service Opportunity

Now that 2012 is underway Third is looking to find new volunteers to join in one of our ministries to assist with financial needs. Twice a month volunteers and deacons meet at the church with community members who need help paying a bill.  Usually people come needing assistance in paying their rent or a utility bill.  Volunteers meet and pray with the people requesting assistance for a few minutes and then make a determination on how best to help

If volunteering with this ministry is something you MIGHT be willing to consider or just want to learn more about, please contact Cheryl Boggs by email caweening@gmail.com or by calling (804) 513-7633.

January Sunday School

In the month of January the YAC class will be merging in with other adult Sunday School classes for a J-term topic called “Gospel Without Borders”

On January 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 9:35-10:35AM we will meet in the Sanctuary and hear the following speakers:

Dr. Mark Valeri, Fritz Kling, Elaine Metcalf, Andrew Fuller, Rev. Richard Haney, and Dr. Danny Avula

The J-Term content will span the past, present and future of evangelical missions.  Topics and trends that will be discussed will include globalization, urbanization, migration, demographics, and financial/political change.  These currents (not to forget the Holy Spirit as well) are all affecting the current and future Church.

Please join us, it should be a really interesting and relevant discussion.
